Advancing Health Literacy & Breast Cancer Awareness
With October just around the corner, now is the perfect time to prepare for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Health Literacy Month, and the important conversations they inspire.
Since 1985, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been dedicated to increasing awareness about breast cancer and emphasizing the importance of early detection through regular screenings, including mammograms. The observance also highlights education, support, and resources for those affected by the disease.
October is also Health Literacy Month, which focuses on the importance of providing clear, accessible, and actionable health information. By improving health literacy, individuals are better equipped to understand their healthcare options, navigate the healthcare system, and make informed decisions that support their overall well-being.
Together, these observances serve as a reminder of the vital role that education, awareness, and access to reliable health information play in promoting healthier communities.
Insights from the Snapshot of Rural Health in Colorado
In 2024, breast cancer screening rates were lower among rural populations compared to urban populations, as found in CRHC’s annual publication The Snapshot of Rural Health in Colorado. Although breast cancer incidence is lower in rural Colorado, rural communities experience a higher mortality-to-incidence ratio. These findings underscore the need for targeted outreach and education in rural areas. By ensuring access to educational materials, encouraging conversations about breast health, and supporting timely screenings, rural healthcare providers can play a critical role in promoting early detection and improving outcomes for individuals affected by breast cancer.
To help address these disparities, healthcare organizations can leverage the Community Analytics Platform (CAP), as part of the Rural Connectivity Program, to identify patients who may be due or overdue for breast cancer screenings. Using data to target outreach efforts allows care teams to engage patients proactively, provide education on the importance of screening, address potential barriers to care, and support timely access to preventive services.
Using the Community Analytics Platform
To identify patients for outreach,
- Select the “Patient Population List” in the “Cancer Screenings and Diagnoses” tab
- To filter for patients who are eligible for a breast cancer screening, select “Breast” from the Screen Category drop-down menu.
- To see who is overdue for a screening, select “Yes” from the Screening Overdue drop-down menu.
This list can then be downloaded into a CSV, PDF or Image format. CSV users can open the report in Excel to streamline your communication efforts.
As we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Health Literacy Month this October, we encourage all providers and care teams to take advantage of available tools and resources to support patient education, promote preventive screenings, and advance health equity across our communities. Explore the Community Analytics Platform to identify patients who may benefit from outreach and help ensure individuals receive the information and care they need. Together, through awareness, education, and proactive engagement, we can make a meaningful impact on health outcomes throughout rural Colorado.
