Topic:  Sepsis: Compliantly Coding Healthcare’s Favorite Moving Target

Some clinicians and researchers have been quoted to say, “Sepsis is like pornography: I can’t define it, but I know it when I see it.”  With solid criteria like that, what could possibly go wrong?!  Coding for sepsis and sepsis-related conditions remains a hot topic among the health care community.  Thanks to frequently changing coding guidelines as well as changing definitions for sepsis and severe sepsis, this isn’t an area of coding uncertainty that will resolve overnight.  Join us for this webinar, which will delve into the documentation and coding issues facing inpatient coders and clinical documentation specialists as they try to nail down compliant documentation to support sepsis codes.

Objectives:

• Differentiate between sepsis and severe sepsis for coding purposes
• Identify situations in which sepsis should be sequenced as principal diagnosis
• Apply the “with” convention to severe sepsis cases
