Protecting Our Communities: Using Data to Strengthen Immunization Coverage
Across rural Colorado, healthcare teams are working to improve immunization rates and protect their communities from preventable illnesses and diseases. But without access to local data, it can be difficult to know where to focus efforts or how to measure progress.
Recent national data shows why this work is crucial. Childhood vaccination coverage in the United States has declined, with some vaccines dropping 1.3 to 7.8 percentage points following pandemic disruptions, and coverage remains lower in rural areas and among underserved communities.
While childhood vaccination often receives the most attention, gaps among adults are just as significant and often more persistent.
National data shows that vaccination coverage among U.S. adults remains low for most recommended vaccines, with substantial variation across populations.
These gaps are driven in part by persistent challenges in rural communities:
- Lower access to care
- Higher rates of uninsured or underinsured populations
- Older populations with greater need for preventive services
- Cultural and language barriers
These factors contribute to lower uptake and more missed opportunities for adult immunization.
Take Control of Immunization Gaps with the CAP
Addressing these challenges goes beyond awareness. Strong data systems are essential to help providers monitor coverage, identify gaps, and guide targeted action.
The Community Analytics Platform brings these capabilities directly to rural providers, allowing quick assessment of how their communities are performing and where action is needed most.
The CAP provides a comprehensive view of immunization performance, including:
- Trends in childhood and adult vaccination rates
- Differences in coverage across populations and geographies
- Missed vaccination opportunities
- Data to support quality improvement and outreach planning
These CAP insights can be used to take practical and targeted action to:
- Identify patients overdue for vaccines and target outreach where gaps are greatest
- Address immunizations at every visit using prompts and reminders
- Run seasonal campaigns focused on flu, shingles, or back-to-school vaccines
- Engage the full care team, from providers to front desk staff, around shared goals
- Tailor messaging locally to reflect community needs and concerns
- Track progress over time, measuring impact and refining strategies
Even small, data-driven clinic efforts can make a meaningful impact. Targeted outreach is more effective and easier to maintain over time.
